https://sites.google.com/site/jimbstuff/home/songs/arrangements-0-9-a-j#Bonobo

Using Classic sites I could add anchors, and I used them in all my sites.  After conversion my “a name” anchors were gone and I looked to see if there were such anchors I could use to open a page scolled down to a specific section.  It took consulting with my computer science major son to look for “div id” amchors.  Your help did not suggest this.  So, where I had previously used https://sites.google.com/site/jimbstuff/home/songs/arrangements-0-9-a-j#Bonobo I now use https://sites.google.com/view/jimbstuff/home/songs/arrangements-0-9-a-j#h.2592ac41c60f3ec6_15 .  Two problems.  The Classic site “a name” anchors always scrolled correctly.  The scrollin using a “div id” anchor sometimes needs to be refreshed a couple times to be positioned correctly.  That can confuse visitors to my sites.  And having an anchor with a name which relates to the content is also more user friendly.  Wouldn’t it make sence to be able to select a secftion while editing a page and have the option “create a named anchor for the top of this secton Name: _____” ?

Notes about printing from PDF files:

· Some files here are available in PDF format.  Some may be available in both PDF and JPG format.

· PDF would usually be the better format for printing or viewing, unless the fonts and text formatting don’t show up correctly on your system.

· When printing a PDF  from a computer, the print dialog has a “Page Sizing / Size options” or “Page Scaling” setting.  If you’ve never changed its default choice, that setting will be set to a choice something like “Fit to Printable Area” instead of “None” or “Actual size”.  But using “Fit” is usually wrong  –  most PDF files are designed with enough white-space margin.  Adding extra margin by default shrinks the page’s content.  It won’t look right.  You need to change the “Page Sizing” setting to “Actual size,” “None” or “100%” when you print a PDF file that already has a white-space margin.

· Some printers allow you to print directly from a flash drive.  This may, unfortunately, mean that you’re stuck with the “Fit to Printable Area” choice.  For such printers (or if you’d rather not change PDF print settings), I have special PDF files with no white-space margin.  If you need these no-margin files, use the “PDF[print-area]” links.

*** Miscellaneous KG 47 Info:

** Music on Zoom:  Here’s a good (if a bit long) primer on sharing music on Zoom by Tony Becker (you may get to meet him at the KG and thank him for his help making KG-47 happen).  It has info on Zoom settings for music, etc.:
https://americeltic.net/performers/

We recommend upgrading to the latest version of Zoom (5.7.4) for the KG.

** Need Help Navigating the Zoom Session During the KG?

When you arrive at the KG, you will be in what Zoom callls the Main Session.  Here you will find a Welcome/Orientation Center, and our famous Den of Iniquity--the Friday Evening Music Circle and the Saturday Night Concert will also happen in the Main Session when their time comes.

The other KG activities--workshops, conversations, spontaneous gettogethers, etc.--will happen in Breakout Rooms.  The Breakout Rooms are named for their kind of activity:  Dulcimer Workshops, Singing Workshops, Other-Instrument Workshops, Robert's Room (yes, Robert Force gets his very own room to do whatever he wants in), All-Music Workshops, Jam Room, Conversation Room, Schmooze Room, and Hangout Room.  When you join a Breakout Room, your name will go on a list of people in that room, so you can also just look at the list of breakout rooms and see who's there; to join, just hover your cursor over the number by the name of the room, and click to join.

If you are not sure how these things work, look at the training videos available on the Zoom website or search Youtube for other training videos. Each "meeting" (i.e., the KG) can have only one host, which will usually be Kathryn.  Kathryn can name any number of people to be "Co-hosts," which gives those individuals the same abilities as the host.  She will probably name everybody who signs up to lead a workshop as a co-host.  Everybody else will be a Participant, but we will try to set up the Breakout Rooms so that everybody can screen share.

PLEASE NOTE:  If you have trouble getting into a Breakout Room, anyone designated a Host or a Co-Host can "assign" you to the room of your choice, so just ask!  You can view who's who by looking at the "Participant" list, and communicate with folks individually or all together by using the "Chat" feature (Or if you’re old-fashioned, you might actually be able to use your mouth to speak!).

We expect that several of the KG folks (serving as Host or Co-Host during the KG, and others, as well) will know, to varying degrees, a bit more about Zoom sessions than the average attendee.  There are folks around you who can help.  And here’s a list of some Hosts/Co-Hosts who want this to work.  Try to find one to ask for help.  If they’re not in any room, just email one listed with an email address:

    Kathryn LaMar:    <dulciphile@yahoo.com> or <kayruth47@gmail.com>
Jim Burrill:    jburrill {at} gmail {dot} com
    Eric Steese   <ericsteese@comcast.net>
    Cathy Traut-Hessom   <caty222@comcast.net>
    Steve Eulberg   <steve@owlmountainmusic.com>
Dennis Harris  <biozoid@mail.com>  for MacBook, Scarlett, Zoom, sound check.

Those on this list may not be the ones who can help directly with every problem, but we’ll try to be prepared to connect you with someone who can.

** Need Help with this #%^@#* Bulletin Board?
Hey, it’s not that bad.  It’s really quite easy!  I (Jim Burrill) am probably most familiar with it.  Find me or email me.  But others should be able to help, as well  (Some instruction on the bulletin board will likely happen on the first day.)

If you haven’t yet, please closely read the short-line instructions at the top of this page.  Editing’s not completely intuitive. You do need to scroll to the very bottom and click [EDIT] to start to edit.  And if you enlarge your browser’s page, text layout may change. Small limitations, a bit frustrating...
But I chose this tool because of how limited it is.  Not much to learn about using it!

One important thing: Remember – no-one else can put anything on the board when you are editing itPrepare to be quick; add your workshop or your concert name & click [SAVE].
For a workshop listing, it’s best to draft your description first in a text editor (like Notepad on Windows), then copy text from there and edit the board to paste into a workshop slot.

No, I don’t exactly know what that orange (+) “add new block” thing is. Just ignore it.

*** KG Schedule - Workshops view/add - Concert signup:

** Spontaneous get-togethers

** Spontaneous one-on-one and small group get togethers can happen at any time during the KG in an open breakout room.  There’ll be several descriptively named breakout rooms for such use.  Or any named room not in use can be used, until it's time for a scheduled activity to happen there.
It’s really just like it was (& will be again) at an in-person KG when you’d say “Hey, let’s sit down and talk or jam” or “Hey, I got a song (or a picture, or special instrument) to show you.” (And if someone else wanders by your get-together, you can invite ’em to join or not.)
Remember, KGs are not loosely organized – they’re very tightly disorganized.

** Thursday set-up, test and learn session
       has happened!

** Friday and Saturday, Welcome!
       have happened!

** WORKSHOPS**

** Here you can post the title, location (your chosen Breakout Room), description, and your name as workshop facilitator for a workshop.
If you list a workshop you’ll facilate, be sure to show up on time to the Workshop Room you listed, prepared to facilitate.  A workshop facilitator should also be a Zoom Co-host, so seek out a Host or Co-host (see above list) to be “knighted,” and/or come to the Thursday setup / test to learn about what a Co-host can do, including helping out folks in need...

A variety of things can be a workshop.
It could be teaching a technique or musical style, or teaching a song.  It could be tips on arranging or singing, or teaching how to play nose flute or drums or playing in an unusual dulcimer tuning.  It could be a songswap on a theme or genre, or a rant about extra frets.  It doesn’t even need to be music-related – maybe teaching origami or telling jokes.  If sharing of screens is possible, a workshop might be where we’d share some synced videos (or other videos in a too highly-produced style to fit with our open-mic style concert).  You should be able to pass printed information along through:

1.  Screen-sharing:  Be sure to watch a training video on this if you haven't done it before.  It involves a series of steps like opening the document on your screen, choosing to screen-share, choosing what you want to share, editing the image for presentation, then actually sharing--once you're sharing, you can't see the image being broadcast, only your original.

2.  Posting a file-sharing link to your document in the Chat.

3.  Posting a pdf document link directly in the Chat.

If you want to attend a workshop, there’s no signup needed.  Just show up in the listed Breakout Room at the right time.  But if the workshop facilitator linked to a PDF or two in the description that you should download for the workshop, you should do so.

When signing up to facilitate workshops, your choices of locations (Breakout Rooms) are:

Dulcimer Workshops          Other-Instrument Workshops           All-Music Workshops

Singing Workshops             Jam Room                                                Conversation Room

Schmooze Room                  Hangout Room                                       Robert's Room

"Other Instruments" means the emphasis is on any instruments other than dulcimer--e.g., ukulele, guitar, banjo, mandolin, etc.  "Singing Workships" can be a capella or accompanied by anything (facilitator specifies, or doesn't)--e.g., Rounds, Spirituals, Nonsense Songs). "All Music" workshops pertain to any instrument, or to music in general--e.g., Theory, Playing for Healing, Physics Applied to Music.  The "Jam Room" is for (surprise) jamming!  You can sign up for a specific type of jam--e.g., Appalachian Fiddle Tunes, Breton Tunes and Rhythms, Dulcimer Jam--if you want it to happen at a specific time; otherwise it is free-for-all jamming. The  "Conversation,"  "Schmooze," and "Hangout Rooms" are available for open or closed sessions you arrange--but please specify on the schedule if it's designated for a workshop and for how long.

You can sign up for a workshop to begin any time the room is free, and have it run as long as you like, but please specify--if you don't, we'll assume it will last for 90 minutes.  (The default start times on the Workshop list give you the option of planning a one hour workshop and letting it expand to 90 minutes before moving the group to an empty room – or even expanding much longer there, if there’s no other workshop planned in the room!)

** FRIDAY AND SATURDAY WORKSHOP SCHEDULE**

    [use Pacific Daylight Time]

FRIDAY WORKSHOPS

1:00 pm PDT - 2:00 pm:

Feel free to replace this paragraph with a workshop listing, the first one for KG-47.  But if nobody’s replaced this with a workshop, let’s all use the time to talk about editing this bulletin board, navigating Zoom – being co-hosts, navigating breakout rooms, screen sharing, Zoom audio and video settings, & other stuff.  If we’re not doing this in the “Welcome Center / Den of Iniquity,” look for us in a Breakout Room.

2:30 pm - 3:30 pm:

Jim Burrill: Simple Songs Don’t Gotta Sound So Repetitive, in Dulcimer Workshops:

A beginners’ / intermediate workshop ... a song we all know ... a civil-disobedience confrontation with systemic speciesism in an authoritarian educational institution sparks conversations on change and love... “Mary Had a Little Lamb.”  Very, very simple chords.

The intermediate-level aspect to the workshop will be:  how using a variety of chord forms helps arrangements.  Most beginners should be able to at least learn the song in its simplest form.  Two PDFs with full lyrics, chords & various fingerings (the second is an enlarged view of the chords) – print them (11" and 14" paper, respectively) and use ’em in the workshop:

4:00-5:30 PM

Kathryn LaMar:  Ah-hah Moments in Learning An Instrument, in All-Music Workshops

Let's get together and share some simple concepts that opened up the world of instrumental playing for us.  Examples would be chord shapes, the circle of fifths, arpeggios, walking bass lines, chord-melody playing, and picking patterns. Show us how your playing flowered after your ah-hah moment(s), and lead us in a song exemplifying it.

SATURDAY WORKSHOPS

First (probably 11:00 am) Saturday Workshop slot:

Stephen Seifert: Learn Like Grandpa Did, in Dulcimer Workshops:

I’ll teach you exactly how to read hands the way some people read sheet music. The focus will be learning in a “do-as-I-do” style similar to what folks did in the old days. DAD tuning. 6½ fret helpful but not required.

1:00 pm - 2:30 pm:

Kathryn LaMar:  The Mighty Ukulele Chapter of KGXLVII, in Other Instruments Workshops

Over the last several years, it has become apparent that practically all KGers also travel in the darker--err, lighter side of music--with their ukes!  Skill levels vary, from novice to professional teacher, so let's bring it all into the open with a Ukulele Playing Circle, including Show & Tell of your menagerie, teaching tips, learning tips, and of course, lots of ukulele songs from all traditions.

Another Saturday Workshop starts 2:30 (you get the idea)

2:30 pm – 3:30 or 4:00 pm

Many Flooties:  World Flute Circle, in Other Instruments Workshops

Stephen – and hopefully Camille, Dan, Kathryn, Tom, and other flute players – will facilitate.  All types of flutes, whistles, recorders, Quenas, shakuhachi, etc

Show and tell, play some, and whatever comes up.  Please join us to toot your own horn (yes, a lot of flooties also play sax)!  There may even be some unmuted free-form jamming – which can actually work if it’s free-form enough...

You’re also welcome to come and listen!

2:30 pm – 3:30 or 4:00 pm

Dean Robinson - The Power of Chord Shapes,
in Dulcimer Workshops

Learn how to quickly navigate the six primary chords in a key and then use those in a variety of chord progressions. Learn to create your own chord progressions.

Saturday workshop slot #4 (4:00 pm - 5:00 pm):

_____

echologic:
a practical demonstration of some basic rhythmic echoes
– prob’ly in All-Music Workshops

echoes in time to a beat are *meta*! :^)

echoes are pattern recognition: oh, 'that', again, and again, in time.

rhythmic echoes are *temporal* pattern recognition: oh 'that' again, at 'that' time, in the groove.

what it is:

in this workshop dan mc will demonstrate some rudimentary rhythmic echoes and discuss some properties of echoes and how they can function in music. this is a listening & discussion workshop, so instruments are not needed.

why rhythmic echoes?

it's the feedback! echoes are a time machine for music, a sonic mirror. there is something seductive about hearing our played music repeated back in time. so echoes make practice more fun!

better yet, echoes make practice more effective. practice works best with feedback on results. listening to our own practice is essential. echoes provide a new perspective, live short term feedback. and rhythmic echoes are good for groove practice. they reinforce the beat without locking it down.

sonically, echoes can give quiet, solo instruments a big, ensemble sound. slower echoes can be deeply calming and meditative.

echoes, sounds repeating in time, a microcosm of music.

** FRIDAY NIGHT SONG SWAP/JAM **
       has happened!

** Saturday Concert**

EmCee:   Eric Steese

** The Saturday Concert will start around 7:00 pm PDT, maybe earlier if many of us sign up.  On the list below, please sign up for a slot to do two songs (or a few jokes) in Sat. night’s “Main Music Room” “open mic” concert.   (To meet requirements of a few folks, there may need to be small adjustments in the order of the performances.  Everyone who signs up should have their turn close to the place on the list where they put their name.)

Don't worry if the concert list is full when you see this.  Just "edit" (scroll to the bottom and click on the [EDIT] button), edit the list to add a new number and your name, and be sure to save your changes.

We will set up the concert so that when it's your turn, you can (1) perform in person as you are, from your own space, (2) via screen-sharing, play a video of yourself performing, or (3) a combination of the two.  We recommend that your recording be similar in style to a simple at-home live performance, or at least reflect your unique personality/persona/character as you would at an in-person KG concert.  YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN RECORDING, AND FOR HANDLING THE SCREEN-SHARE (there are lots of youtube tutorials and zoom lessons on screen-sharing for learning how to do this).

** Concert list:

Two songs each.

1: Joel Hoback, recorder

2: Bev Hoback, dulcimer and guitar

3: Dennis Harris

4: Randy Wilkinson

5: Stephen Seifert, Mountain Dulcimer

6: Dean Robinson, Mountin Dulcimer

7: Mark Filler - dulcimer / tongue drum

8: Emily Frodsham / Lance Frodsham

9: Mark Levy

10:  Kathryn LaMar

11: Leo Kretzner

12:  Eric Steese

13:

14: Jim Burrill and Camille Fischer

15:

16: Dean & Elaine Robinson

Remember, if this list fills up, just keep adding numbers and names--KG concerts can last through the wee small hours of Sunday.  Your kitchen and bathroom are only steps away--take care of your own biological needs, and leave quietly when you must.  But please stick to the 2-song limit per act.

NB:  You can be in more than one act if it fits where you sits--e.g., a couple can perform each as a solo act and together as a duo act--just space them out.

** SUNDAY

** Some folks will stay until some time on Sunday morning.  (Maybe you need some sleep before you drive home...?)  If anybody wants to get together for something on Sunday morning (breakfast ... or a last minute workshop ... or a song swap / muted sing-along in favor of {or opposed to} one or another kind of deity ... or an orgy ...) it can happen.  Well, within the limitations of Zoom...

It turns out that owners of the patch of cyberspace used for KG-47 video won’t forcibly drag out KG stragglers by the hair after the “Songs to Fill your Heart” workshop.  Those interested in flutes who stick around to 2:00 pm PDT will find themselves in a different Zoom event held in the same patch of cyberspace – a regularly-held World flute circle, also hosted by Kathryn.  See below.)

** If you wanna list any Sunday event like those mentioned, you can put an event title, its time and a description here:

Sunday Workshops

9:30 AM - 10:30 AM PDT

... [replace this text with a workshop in the Friday/Saturday workshop format] ...

11:00 AM - noon or later...

Kathryn LaMar:  Songs to Fill Your Heart--Hymns, Spirituals, Gospel Songs, Atheist Songs, Earth Songs, Whatever--In Singing Workshops

Let's leave Mini-Virtual KG XLVII on a high note--singing and playing our favorite Sunday morning music--from KGs past, your own personal history, or how you want us to remember you until next year in (Oregon?????) at KG XLVIII!.

THIS IS NOT A KG WORKSHOP--SINCE I'LL ALREADY BE ON ZOOM, I'VE SCHEDULED A FLUTE CIRCLE FOR SOME MEETUP GROUPS AND SHIFT NETWORK COMMUNITY GROUPS I'M IN.  KG ATTENDEES ARE WELCOME TO STAY FOR THIS, OR WE CAN SET UP A BREAKOUT ROOM FOR YOU, WHICH WILL WORK AS IT DID ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY.  HERE'S THE ANNOUNCEMENT I PUT OUT:

2:00 PM

Kathryn: Universal, Giant, NAF-Style Flute Circle, in Main Session

Let's all get together and have a giant playing circle, in which we show off our flutes, play them, share with others our little playing ah-hah moments, and overwhelm each other with our ability to share your emotions and creativity through our flute! Recorders and pennywhistles are welcome, along with any other world flutes you have. We will go around the circle as many times as we can--with each turn, you'll have up to 3 minutes to share one thing. Looking forward to sharing with all who come, and arranging to do this regularly, if possible.

** KG Next Year??

There are no firm plans for the KG in 2022, but there has been some discussion about it probably being an in-person gathering again possibly at the same location where it was in 2019, Sanctuary Farm, Silverton, OR, on the third weekend of July.  That was a great location.

Recently the best place for KG info has been https://sites.google.com/site/KGDulcimerFest .  But the URL will be different soon after this year’s KG is over,  Instead of the current
“/site/KGDulcimerFest”, it will be “/view/KGDulcimerFest” because Google is making me update (and spend many hours reformatting) all four such sites I maintain.  So that new URL will be the place where you can find out about any firm plans for KG-48.
